Abstract


The Indonesian is a pluralistic nation, which means of multicultural, multi-religious, and multiethnic. The diversity must be addressed with a great soul. Therefore, this nation needs education that not only produces smart student but also has character; character that deals with religious values. This character can respond wisely with differences. Rasulullah SAW as the main role model of Muslims since 14 centuries ago has enforced the principles that the world community is now called democratic people. Rasulullah SAW built a community of Madinah that can provide space to the diversity. There is no compulsion for non-Muslims to be Muslims, or put Muslim society higher than non-Muslims with different rights and obligations. These values must be given to the next generation of a plural society in NKRI so that it becomes peaceful, secure and prosperous life in NKRI materialized. Islamic Education is instrumental in character building of democratic students. This is closely related to the function of Islamic education in schools. Islamic religious education in schools/madrasah serves as development, distribution, improvement, prevention, adjustment, source of value, and teaching. Democratic means the idea or life view that prioritizes equality of rights and duties and similar behavior for all citizens. Democratic character develops mutual understanding, respect, or tolerance between one person and another, especially regarding rights and duties.
